Day 90 – War Wings

Take to the skies in War Wings! Climb into the cockpit of your fully customisable warplane and get ready for take-off – your mission is about to begin! Be an ace pilot! Fly solo as a lone wolf or team up with your squadron to control the skies. Pull off gravity-defying stunts and tricks, get the enemy in your sights and hit the trigger to shoot them down. It’s life or death up there, and only the bravest and most skilled pilots will survive!

After three months we are finally here. The 90th review. It has been a long ride, and it feels fitting that we end on a literal high; with War Wings, currently ranked #1 on the App Store. Personally, I am not a fan of complicated controls, especially on mobile where the touch screen is so small, so the control menu of this game instantly frightened me.

Thank the gaming gods for tutorials.

For once, I actually felt comfortable flying a plane,  and I realised that this was a game that wanted you to have fun rather than a realistic experience. Dogfights have always been a fun concept; for many it is like a true, first-hand war experience. This game is great at capturing that, as I fly through the air I truly feel like a fighter pilot, taking down enemy planes with my awesome weaponry and manoeuvres.

The graphics are very good, with an entire 3D world at your feet, making this is a genuinely immersive game. The soundtrack is also good at providing that epic feel and sense of honour, which is really good for pumping you up ready to fight. There is plenty of content to get through, with story missions and PvP battle modes. I favour the PvP as I find it’s cut-throat nature the most rewarding. That feeling when you destroy an actual person’s plane is too good to miss, especially when you and your fellow comrades dominate a match.

Overall, this game is great, and with films like Dunkirk coming out recently, I think there is no better way to commemorate the 100th anniversary of WWI than to fight through similar experiences yourself.
